Kratos(God of war)

I never thought I would fall for a fictional character this much, that made me stalk the entire internet to search for this character and even write about him.

Kratos heading towards thor’s statue

As the title suggests it is about Kratos who is referred to as the “God of war” or “ghost of Sparta”, in my case they both sound absolutely awesome.

The history and character design and development are just amazing in their own ways as we can see an absolute blast in the character development of Kratos, from a spartan warrior to a responsible father.

In the recent game god of war 4, he plays the role of a father to his son, Atreus, and teaches him all the ways of becoming a good hunter and a better god than the others he has faced in his past.

But all of this, “me liking Kratos” thing put me in a spot of whether Kratos is a hero or a villain?

Yeah sure according to many people who played god of war will say that Kratos is a good guy and his choice to kill the gods was purely because of the god's foul play, starting with Ares. But that doesn’t prove he is a good person. It just shows one side of the truth, which is the story of Kratos himself.

But did gods have better reasoning than Kratos?

Let's take Ares first, Kratos exchanged his loyalty for victory in a battle with Ares, the former god of war. Then he obeyed the orders of Ares and killed his enemies and innocents, and finally his loved one in bloodthirst. After he realized the trickery of Ares he rose up against the gods in anger.

The choice Kratos made for a victory took away his family, so is it really the god's fault who gave him what he wished for?

Kratos under Ares command

If Kratos was really a good person he would have spared the innocents too. He proved to be the worst at the beginning of the series and killed everyone he was ordered to kill, which is the absolute worst character according to me.

But this is the part where he really became a hero to me!

After him being tricked by his own boss, he quit the job and fought against him, and won. Thus getting his name “Ghost of Sparta”, he was supported by Zeus and the other gods without realizing he was gonna be their ultimate end.

Kratos facing off against Zeus

So as the story goes Zeus also tricks his own son, Kratos, and strips away Kratos’s godly power, and also banishes him to hell, which is bad…like really bad, not for Kratos but him! And then once again after defeating all his enemies standing between him and Zeus, Kratos faces his father and kills him and accepts for who really is, and understands that there is no sorry for what he had done by killing this many people, innocent and even his own family. Finally “killing” himself!

That’s where I thought they were gonna end it, to be honest, but after that hopefully, they decided to do another part, but this time in a new mythology and one of my personal favorite one, The Norse mythology.

Kratos riding a boat along with his son

To be honest, this is one of THE BEST god of war game by far and I loved every part of the journey and the end was really one hell of a blast entrance for the god of thunder, Thor.

Kratos's character development, as I mentioned at the start can be seen in this game as he really becomes a fatherly figure for his son, Atreus after his wife’s death. He manages his anger really hard and tries to be very responsible and protective around his son. The best moments were when he tries to comfort Atreus but holds it back for some reason, holding his feelings within so they don't get distracted too much in the journey.

In many parts of the journey through Midgard, the place attracted me more than anything else. The whole scenery set the mood for a peaceful yet adventurous exploration. The boat rides were the most brilliant when Kratos actually spoke more and even told stories to his son. To be honest, I didn’t even think Kratos would speak that much, but that was a whole new mood and character enlightenment.

So looking back at my question again, if Kratos is a hero or a villain, to be honest, he is a villain who became a hero in the end to me. He could have chosen a lot different path and still accept himself as a murderer and done stuff for Ares, but no! he didn't, and that’s what makes him better than the others.

I'm looking forward to the next game from this series and the trailer was a bomb, can't wait for it to release and hopefully see how Atreus grows up to be a better god under the training of another god, his father, Kratos, The God of war.
